A Journey back into the Middle Ages

The mighty fortress site containing Burg castle was at the height of its power in the Middle Ages. Built at the start of the 12th century, for three hundred years it was the power centre of the Counts of Berg, who gave their name to the “Bergisch Land”. Count Engelbert, the man who expanded the site considerably, is commemorated in the form of a statue on horseback which now stands in front of the walls.

Anyone visiting the site today will find themselves travelling back in time to the Middle Ages. Here visitors can experience at first hand how life used to be within the awe-inspiring castle walls, the Knights Room, the ladies’ apartments and a chamber full of armour, not to speak of tournaments and other mediaeval and modern activities several times a year.

The view from the top is a dream. From the elevated terraces you can look over the valleys and hillsides of the Wupper far into the Bergisch Land. And if you are looking for something really special you are sure to find it at one of the markets and bazaars held throughout the year in the mediaeval atmosphere of Burg Castle.
You can reach the castle at the top of the hill by car or motorcycle. The road is full of bends and there’s a car park right next to the castle. If want to do it the sporty way you can tackle the steep road to the castle on foot. A narrow steep path winds up through the shady wood to the top of the hill. Or you can do it the easy way by travelling in a cable car. Just climb aboard, sit back and wave your legs in the air over the woods as you enjoy the breathtaking view above the Wupper. If you’re arriving by bike it’s also no problem: the cable car has been specially adapted to transport bicycles!
