Eat to your heart’s content

One way of getting to know a region really well is through its food. And a really good meal in pleasant surroundings is an integral part of a successful day.

“Coffee and all the extras“ is the speciality in the Bergisch Three. The Bergisch Coffee Table, as it’s known, is celebrated in many hotels, cafés and restaurants.
This opulent version of afternoon coffee consists of currant cake and black bread, honey, black syrup, quark and cheese, rice pudding with cinnamon and sugar, along with waffles served with hot cherries and cream. If you really want to keep to the original menu you finish it off by dunking a Burg Pretzel or a sweet Bergisch rusk in your coffee. After all this we recommend a good Doppelkorn brandy or a fruit spirit to help you digest it all. At the heart of the “coffee table” is a pewter pot called the “Dröppelminna”, with a small tap at the bottom from which the coffee drips into the cup.

A rather less lavish – but equally tasty – variation of the complete “coffee table” consists of Bergisch waffles with hot cherries and cream.

If you really want a hearty meal you should try a so-called Kottenbotter. This rustic speciality consists of two slices of buttered bread (black or grey), each topped with smoked sausage, slices of onion and mustard. In former times grinders used to have a “Kottenbotter“ for breakfast in their grinding workshops.

Potato pancakes are also a great favourite. Here they are called “Pillekuoken“ and “Riefkuoken”. A Pillekuoken is a bit like a large pancake, whereas a Riefkuoken is small and fried crisply in a lot of fat. No matter the size, both are served with generous portions of things like salmon, crème fraîche or horse radish. You can vary this with the addition of apple sauce, black syrup or apple butter.

The Bergish Three invite you to feast to your heart’s content. There’s something to suit everyone’s taste.
